Robert Barry Kaplan: Author, Writer, Novelist, and Story Teller

About this Web Site
This is the Robert Barry Kaplan web site, which exists solely to publicize the short stories and novels of Robert Barry Kaplan.

I've been writing fiction for a long time, but I never tried to publish anything until recently. I always knew it would be difficult--some of my friends even told me it would be impossible--but I decided to give it a try anyway.

As it turned out, my friends were right. But even as the rejection letters started to pour in, I refused to be discouraged. I just kept writing and writing, in the vain hope that I'd eventually create a literary work of art that someone would want to publish. But after the stack of rejection letters got so huge that it took two people to lift it, I began to think that nothing I wrote would ever get published unless I published it myself. So that's what I decided to do.

Fortunately, self-publishing is easier now than it's been in the past, due to the growing number of Print-on-Demand publishers. These companies make it easier and less expensive for writers to publish, market, and distribute their books.

Since 2005, I've been gradually publishing everything I've written that I think is worth reading. You can go to just about any online bookseller and order all my books, or you can browse through this web site and see if anything I've written seems interesting to you. If nothing does, then you have something in common with the vast majority of publishers and literary agents. Otherwise, you can check this site occasionally for up-to-the-minute information about publishing dates. You can also email me for any other information.

Latest News
January 2008:   I recently became a member of EditRed. You can see my member page here. EditRed is a site where people who write can have what they've written critiqued by other people who write. I'll be posting some of the stories from Essential Stories there, so if you want to read them without buying the book, this is probably the best way to do it. (The second best way is probably to steal the book, which I recommend against.)
December 2007:   Excellent news, everyone. If you've been waiting to buy my short story collection, Essential Stories, then wait no longer, because it was published late this month and is now available. And if you haven't been waiting to buy it, then consider this: For $19.95, you get 70 very entertaining stories that are unlike anything you've ever read before, unless you've read one of my novels, which you probably haven't.

In the Bibliography section of this web site, I mentioned that I sometimes think my second novel, Vacationing with Jel, is one of the best things I've ever written. That's true, but the rest of the time I think the short stories collected in Essential Stories are probably the best things I've ever written. Now you have the chance to decide for yourself.

It's available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and just about every other online bookstore, or you can get it from the publisher, iUniverse. At only 28.5 cents per story, you can't go wrong buying this book, but if you'd like to read the first few stories for free, you can do so here.

October 2007:   I just submitted the manuscript for Essential Stories to iUniverse. It should be published before the end of the year. I was originally going to publish these stories in two volumes, but it was easier for me to put them all in one big book than in two little ones. It will be easier for you as well, since you'll be able to read all these wonderful stories without having to go to the trouble of buying an additional book.
April 2007:   Interesting news, everyone. My third novel, The Useless Detective, was published this month. I didn't like this book that much when I was writing it, but after rereading it recently, I've come to realize that it's actually pretty good. The book is a real pleasure to read, especially if you enjoy bleak humor, cynicism, pessimism, misanthropy, and general gloominess.

It's still not my favorite of the three novels, but based on what I've learned from publishing the other two, my tastes aren't necessarily the same as everybody else's. So you might absolutely love this book. Or you might not. There's no way of knowing until you read it. You can read the first chapter here, or you can buy it at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iUniverse, and virtually every other online bookstore. At $15.95, it's almost a bargain.

March 2007:   I finally got around to submitting the manuscript for The Useless Detective to iUniverse. That means it will probably be published sometime in April. In the meantime, you'll just have to find other idiosyncratic yet highly entertaining books to spend your money on.
January 2007:   It's taken me a lot longer than I thought it would to finish proof-reading The Useless Detective. That's because I'm not particularly motivated to complete it, since I understand that nobody's going to buy it and nobody's going to read it. The truth is, I can't give these books away. That's not an exaggeration, by the way, and to prove it, I have a few extra copies of Vacationing with Jel that I will try to give away for free (except for a maybe nominal charge to cover the costs of packaging and mailing). Just email me at rbk@rbkaplan.com for details.

As for The Useless Detective, I should actually be done proof-reading it this week. Once that's done, I'll need to create a front cover for it, and then I can send it off to be published.

July 2006:   I'm currently revising my third novel, The Useless Detective, to make it ready for publication sometime this year.

But these things often take a lot more time than they should, so it might not be ready until early next year.

January 2006:   Great news, everyone. Vacationing with Jel has been published. If you read my previous novel, you'll probably like this one more. Or maybe you'll like it less. Or maybe you won't even read it in the first place, which I recommend against. For what it's worth, I like this one a lot more, and I'm the author, so my opinion should carry a little weight here.

If you're looking for an engaging offbeat tale of enduring love, I can't think of a better book for you to buy. It's only $16.95, which is less than the cost of the previous book. (For those who are interested, iUniverse sets the price based on the number of pages, not on the quality of the book.)

It's available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and everywhere else fine books are sold. You can also buy it at iUniverse, or you can read the first few pages here.

December 2005:   It took me longer than expected to finish proof-reading Vacationing with Jel, so I didn't send it to iUniverse until the middle of December. That means it won't be published until January or February.
October 2005:   None of the dozen or so people who read my first novel had anything overtly negative to say about it, so I took that as encouragement to go ahead and publish my second novel, Vacationing with Jel. I'm in the middle of proof-reading it, and whenever I finish with that, I'll submit it for publication. With any luck, it'll be available before the year is over.
August 2005:   Instead of doing anything useful or productive, I decided to create a blog. It isn't specifically about writing--it isn't specifically about anything--it's just a place where I can record whatever thoughts pop into my head. You may find it entertaining as well, so even if you've never read a blog in your life, you should definitely read this one. I don't know how often I'll update it--I'll probably start out by posting something every few days, and then gradually post less and less as I slowly lose interest. Time will tell. Here's the link: rbkaplan.blogspot.com.
April 2005:   Good news, everyone. At The Arms has been published. It's available online from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as from iUniverse (the publisher). If you've got $19.95 that you're dying to part with, this is the ideal spending opportunity for you. You're sure to enjoy the book. It's probably not the best thing I've ever written, but it's still pretty good, so I think you should buy a copy.

If you're not sure you want to buy it, you can learn more about the book here--you can even read the first chapter online if you want, but to maximize your reading pleasure, you'll probably want to buy a copy and read the whole thing.

March 2005:   I decided to publish At The Arms with iUniverse. I sent them the manuscript in February. The book should probably be available sometime in April or May.
January 2005:   I'm planning on publishing At The Arms (the first of my novels) sometime during the first few months of 2005.
